Following successive promotions as division champions, we finished 3rd in Merit Table Division 1 this season — securing a play-off place at the first attempt. It wasn't always straightforward; the odd fixture disruptions due to other teams being unable to field sides made for an inconsistent rhythm at times, but we persevered and never lost focus.
We reached the play-off final and were minutes away from promotion. Two decisions. Two mistakes. One converted try. That — nothing more — is the difference between Merit Table 1 and the Merit Premier.
But here's the thing: this has been another stellar season for West London RFC, and that deserves to be said clearly. Merit Table 1 is competitive. Before we entered the merit structure, this level was comfortably on par with Middlesex League 2 — and we were competitive every single week. We blooded new faces, watched established players hit new heights, and built something real. We didn't lose that final because we weren't good enough. We lost it by the finest of margins. We move on, and we will learn from it.
So where do we go from here?
After careful reflection, the club has made a considered decision: we are returning to the Middlesex leagues. For 2026/27, West London RFC will compete in Middlesex Counties 2 — a move the club has been working towards over the years and one we're genuinely excited about.
Yes, the RFU league structure brings more rigid regulations, fewer last-minute cancellations, and a real demand for a full, committed squad every single week. But that's exactly the kind of challenge this club is built to meet. The foundations are strong. The ambition is stronger. See you next season.
